房间
上午十一点左右到达爱丁堡。靖恒在德士上还挺开心的。
我们住的房间在三楼，梯级是灰石做的，螺旋的，窄又高；抱着一个两岁大的男孩还真不容易爬上去！两个房间还够大，我们把较小间里的单人床搬进大间的，让靖恒跟我们一起睡。大一点的这间房也摆放了书桌，衣橱，玩具，书本，电脑等物件；另一间房几乎是空着的，主要当凉衣室。厨房和厕所是小了点，但最头痛的是那三层楼梯。我想，如果建明偶尔出国参加会议，我该没有这个能力抱着靖恒拿着买回来的东西爬上来。所以，现在我们在四处看看，有没有比较低层的房间。不过，这里真的很方便，我还可以从拜二到拜五带靖恒到不同的地方让他跟其他孩子玩两个小时，别的地方可能会太远。
The flat we are staying in now, I have nothing much to complain about except 1) the spiral, steep staircase, 2) the small kitchen, 3) the small bathroom-cum-toilet. I can tolerate 2) and 3), but 1) is tough! Especially since I have to climb 3 flights of those, sometimes carrying Ethan, when he refuses to climb up or down or when he's asleep. Oh yes, the floor is sloping too, so things roll on the table/drawers cannot be shut unless you prop it up to balance it. That is more of Jianming's peeve though. :)

天气自然是冷的。可我们也碰到几天阳光普照，好像夏天。靖恒起初在额头上和唇边的皮破得有些红。现在好多了，不知道是不是因为我们给他涂了由护士介绍的润肤剂(星期三带她去给护士看了一下，看还有什么预防针得打）。100毫升的润肤剂要十五块。
The weather has been blowing warm and cold. 10 Oct for example, is almost like summer. I saw people walking around in short sleeves. Just 9 Oct, it rained the whole day and was really cold. 建明拿到一个可以放在马桶上让幼童坐的椅子（虽然不能放得刚刚好）。现在靖恒要大便，已肯自己坐下来大，不用我拉住他蹲着或是站着了！

每当一出门，就嚷着要“抱抱”，而且很多时候不肯让建明抱。下楼要抱，上楼要抱，走平坦的路要抱，去超市买东西也要抱。所以，1/10早上我们到一个人的家拿了一个小推车。
推车真有点小，暂时用用，看有没有其他人给个好点的。在新加坡一直坚持不买推车，这里可不行了。有时得走较远的路，总不能一直抱着呀。而且，不知是不是因为环境生疏，或是穿了那件大外套（他没穿时好像比较肯走路），他很少肯自己走路的。建明起初用“妈妈累累”来哄他让建明抱，可最近不管用了，他甚至会‘举一反三’，说“爸爸累累”！最近到超市我们采取了新的策略，也没什么新鲜的，就是让他自己走，帮我们拿东西放进篮子里，虽然要看住他又要选东西，可是总比抱着好。我想很多父母都是这样经历过的吧，只是我是在听到一位老妇跟靖恒讲话时（这里的老人很喜欢停下来逗小孩，何况很少是像靖恒这样到处走的，大多数都躺在推车里），才恍然大悟。
He's been asking us to carry most of the time. Especially the first week or so. We figured it could be the unfamiliar surroundings, the cold weather so unlike Singapore and the bulky clothing he has to wear. He's asking for 'carry' slightly less often now, but oh, ever so slightly.

第一天就发现，他的声音有时变得很‘喋’，好像撒娇似的。尤其是跟我说话时，或是有什么要求时。。。频次有渐渐减少了，看着办吧。可能一切对他来说太新了，虽然好玩，可是也得适应我们大人新的习惯/活动。
At times, his voice got really erm... 'childish'? Not like his real voice, more 'girlish'. Oh, I don't know the English word for it. But the change could be due to my mood swings. Oh, I don't know.

他最近已没什么大哭，可前几天有几次拼命的哭，直到我能抱他为止：
1。拜二建明上课，我煮午餐时。

The first few days, when he couldn't get used to being with Jianming yet, he cried very loudly and intensively whenever I had to leave him to do things. But nowadays, it's been alright. Just that I still can't leave him alone for too long (like taking a shower) if Jianming is not around. So, when Jianming goes for conference... fingers crossed.

这么深奥的一门学问，还是让我以日记的方式阐明吧。
24/9：在荷兰机场
/飞机上都有睡一会儿。晚上早睡。半夜2.30起来，吵着上了几次厕所，直到凌晨5.30。
25/9：早上7点左右起来。下午1点多睡。凌晨3.30起，同样吵着要上厕所。
26/9: 不肯睡午觉。傍晚6点睡。傍晚7.30尝试叫他起来吃晚餐，不成。晚上9点再叫。晚上10.30睡。
27/9：早上7点起床。下午1.30睡到3点。晚上9点睡到凌晨4.30。不肯睡了。
28/9：早上出去买菜，回来时，9.30睡到10.30。下午5.15睡，傍晚7.30叫醒他吃晚餐。晚上10.15睡。
29/9：早上6.15起床，下午2点在回家的路上睡着。
睡眠渐渐开始正常，可是至今还没在家成功哄他睡午觉。
The first three days were hellish, waking up in the wee hours of the night. Thank goodness it did not take him long to adjust. However, afternoon nap is still a problem. And if he does not get it, he may go to sleep like 6pm or so, if we were out around that time. So if he does not get his nap, then bringing him out in the afternoon is a problem as he will most likely go to sleep at strange hours, and we have to wake him for dinner. Still struggling.
吃
24/9：在荷兰机场

好挑食！也许是吃不惯一些东西。还在找出原因，到底什么他肯吃完，什么他不愿尝试，一直咧出来。。He's not been as picky on food in Singapore. Not sure why. Maybe he can't get used to my cooking, which is terrible, I admit. He's getting better though, or I am getting better at predicting his appetite?
玩伴
没有固定的玩伴，知道其他孩童的存在，通常自己玩，偶尔会跟别的小孩吵架，甚至一起玩- 这是靖恒玩耍的观察。
星期三：这里的联络所从早上10点到中午12点，会开放一间礼堂，在那儿摆放很多玩具，让父母带小孩来玩。每次0.50英镑。 我和建明付了六镑会员费。间中还有茶点给小朋友们。
星期一和四：这里的一个教堂也有同样的设施。每次0.50英镑。时间是早上9.30到11.30。
星期五：另一间教堂，在哪儿上礼拜的母亲们也同样组织了可让孩子玩乐与交流的机会。免费。时间是早上10点到中午12点。规模比较小，玩具也比较少，可是那些母亲们喜欢在一起聊天，与之前的家长与家长之间没什么沟通的情况，亲切了一点。不过，也正因为如此，我在那里觉得有点怪怪的。
星期二：在爱丁堡大学就读的学生的妻子和孩子们也有相似的聚会。我还没去。去了再谈一谈。

这几个地方靖恒都是第一次去（除了拜二的我还没去），看他玩得挺开心的，即使刚开始会生疏了些。看看下次还会不会喜欢。我倒是觉得挺好的。

There are various playgroups (or what they call Parent and Toddler groups, where a parent can bring the children to play the toys and interact with other kids and parents for about 2 hours in the morning) here, from Monday to Friday, thanks to the location of our flat (which is a big part of the reason why I do not want to move despite of the stairs). I think some do close for the holiday period though, so I have got to find out when they will stop.
Monday and Thursday: St Peter's Episcopal Church at Lutton Street, the furthest from our place. 9.30am to 11.30am.
Tuesday: Edinburgh University's Women's Club at Buccleuch Place. 9.45am to 12pm.
Wednesday: Southside Community Centre at Nicolson Street. 10am to 12 pm.
Friday: Buccleuch and Greyfriars Free Church at West Crosscauseway. 10am to 12 pm.
