Scabies? Scabies! That's what the doctor thinks Jethro has.
Jethro has been having these itchy, red blotches on his genital areas, scalp and necks for a week or more. I have also started having similar rashes around my waist and arms. And it seemed to get worse and not better, so finally I brought him (and me) to see the GP yesterday.
The doctor was actually not sure. There is a tell tale sign of tunnels on the skin (made by the baby mites that hatch out from the eggs laid inside us) but she couldn't find any. Me neither. They could do a skin test to check for mites but I think GPs don't bother to. So she just prescribed me the cream for Scabies (Permethrin 5%). I am to go back in a week's time if the symptoms are not relieved.
The cream had to be applied all over the body for more than 8 hours and the best time is of course around bedtime. Imagine smearing insecticide all over the body. I think this is as close as it can get.
After a quick look at the internet, I started my washing frenzy. Bedsheets, pillow cases, blankets, pyjamas, gloves, jumpers, socks, bobble hats - almost everything I could think of and the list just got longer from morning to afternoon to evening. I stopped at the coats though, because it just seemed too daunting by then. And this is the first time we used the dryer here, because there is absolutely no space for 3 sets of bedsheets, not to mention all the other clothes as well.
I also intended for Ethan and Jianming to apply the cream too, even though the doctor hadn't prescribed for them and there might not be enough cream to go round - I am supposed to use a whole tube while Jethro a quarter of it. They haven't any rashes yet but Scabies is supposed to be very infectious. The whole family should be treated at the same time, according to the Patient UK website.
So I delayed the kids' shower time yesterday since the cream has to be washed off within 12 hours. I couldn't seem to get the whole tube on me and I might have put too little on Ethan and Jethro. I am afraid this won't work well, but we'll see if in a week or so, the rashes reduce. In the morning, we had to take showers again, and hence, more washing to dry. (But it did feel refreshing, that morning shower. Everyone seems more awake after it.)
What a bother, and I thought I didn't have to do much washing already.
Double bother, I feel itchy and scratchy.
